US Sleep Health Data Reveals Big Problems
According to the latest figures, US adults have a serious sleeping problem! Over one-third (35%) of adults don’t get the recommended seven hours of sleep each night.
Approximately 20%, or 1 in 5, US adults have a sleeping disorder, and a recent CDC study indicates that the 45 to 54-year-old age group is getting the least amount of sleep.
The most common sleeping problem is insomnia with some 60 million people suffering from the disorder, and millions of others with other sleep conditions such as:
- Sleep apnea
- Restless legs syndrome
- REM sleep behavior disorder
Not sleeping well and not getting enough sleep can deteriorate overall health and wellness, leading to sickness, anxiety, depression, or injury.

Is CBD Safe for Sleep?

One study on CBD and sleep in humans conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo, Brazil was recently published in the journal, Frontiers in Pharmacology.
They tested 300 mg. of CBD on sleep in healthy volunteers and found that “CBD does not appear to interfere with the sleep cycle of healthy volunteers.”
The experiment was conducted in 26 volunteers on two occasions, once with CBD, and once with placebo, and suggests CBD has no negative impact on sleep health.
While early findings are promising, further clinical research is required to confirm any benefits or risks of CBD related to sleeping conditions.
CBD’s Benefits for Sleep
CBD’s properties act in several multi-faceted ways that may have an impact on sleep health. Its primary target is the endocannabinoid system, which is intimately related to balancing other bodily systems.
Studies indicate that CBD boosts the presence of endocannabinoids such as anandamide in the bloodstream. Anandamide is used in the body for many functions, including sleep and wake regulation.
Other properties of CBD that may impact sleeplessness include,
- Activating serotonin receptors (5-HT1A)
- Binding with CB2 receptors relaxes muscles and nerves
- Suppression of inflammatory cytokine compounds
- Reduces cortisol production
All of these properties combined act to induce a naturally calming sensation that is reported to encourage resting.
Researchers studying CBD’s beneficial properties for sleep suggest the compound holds tremendous therapeutic value for insomnia suffers, however, a further clinical investigation is needed.
