CBD & Covid-19

In a recent Forbes article, researchers claim that cannabis may help reduce lung inflammation caused from Covid-19. A study on the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD suggests that it could be a “plausible therapeutic avenue” of therapy.

The Health Canada research license tested how CBD extract could protect Covid-19 susceptible tissues including the lungs, nasal, and oral cavities from infection. Recent data collected shows promising results, where CBD assisted in reducing the ability of certain proteins that allow Covid-19 to infect cells and function. Some products they are considering as a form of preventative treatment are CBD-infused mouthwash and a throat gargle to reach the Covid-19 top target membrane.

CBD has been shown to activate cannabinoid receptors, which ultimately reduces inflammation in the body when it bonds with these receptors. The reduction in inflammation helps to regulate the immune system as a whole.

CBD can also help balance cytokines, or signaling proteins found in the body, which are also created by immune cells. Covid-19 actually causes the body to produce abnormal amounts of cytokines, causing additional inflammation.

Naturally found within the human body, cannabinoids are easily mimicked by CBD. Cannabinoids are necessary to balance the body’s endocannabinoid system. Phytocannabinoids like CBD help replenish what the body may be lacking, in a more natural method. This can be found to be gentler on the body than other drugs or forms of treatment such as steroids or Tocilizumab, which has also been studied in the treatment of Covid-19.

Endocannabinoids have the ability to increase the production of antioxidants to regulate the immune system, one of them being glutathione. This study also claims that endocannabinoids can be stronger at boosting glutathione than Vitamin C.

Overall, many factors must be considered and more research needs to be done to identify effective treatment options. It is hopeful that CBD could possibly become part of the solution to the Covid-19 pandemic and an overall treatment for many inflammatory conditions.
